Medical Check-Up Awareness

Regular medical check-up is an effort to thoroughly assess the health condition. This incorporates physical examination, laboratory test and other diagnostic supports to figure out the health condition someone has in a specific period of time. "Medical check-up should be done before the occurrence of the disease, especially for those who have entered the age of 25 years. Especially, if there is a history of diabetes and hypertension in the family, and a tendency to become obese," said Dr. Dyah Agustina W., a member of the Central Presidium of Indonesian General Practitioners Association (PDUI). Medical check-up needs to be done since a young age considering that nowadays many young people are living an unhealthy lifestyle. They eat any kind of tasty foods without considering its nutritional content. Therefore, it is recommended for them to do the medical check-up at least once every 3-6 months.

The problem is that there are still many people who are afraid and reluctant to do a medical check-up. Some of them also consider a medical check-up a waste of money, particularly if the result turns out to be normal anyway. "In fact, a medical check-up enables us to detect as early as possible the disorder in our health, so we can immediately take some preventive measures to deal with it. The cost of the medication will also be much lower compared to the cost paid when the disease have reached the advanced stages," said Dr. Dyah.

So, why are you still afraid to do a medical check-up? Early detection of health disorders or diseases allows for easier medication. "Without understanding what is really going on with our body, it is not so easy to diagnose and determine the proper therapy. Everything can only be determined through physical examination, laboratory test and other diagnostic supports. Then the doctors will be able to diagnose and determine the appropriate therapy and medication," said Dr. Dyah. No more saying: "just let it be, I will get one once I' m ill," because it would be too late. In fact, by detecting health disorder or disease earlier, the medication may not be needed because it can be treated by changing the lifestyle such as doing regular exercise and fat diet.

In contrast to those who have understood the benefits of medical check-up and consciously have done it routinely, now some young people are "forced" to do a medical check-up to meet the requirements for a new employees admission. Many companies in Indonesia have obliged their prospective employees or even the employees to take a medical check-up for the sake of efficiency and productivity. This policy is understandable because the high morbidity rate will decline the employees' performance and productivity. As a result, the cost of medication incurred by the company will be higher, making the company suffer from the loss.

Another phenomenon is the trend of conducting a medical check-up abroad, among the upper classes. Whereas, the medical check-ups in Indonesia actually are not that inferior compared to the ones abroad. "A basic medical check-up, for example, it' s actually a simple procedure so it can be done by a regular clinical laboratory, even at a full-equipped local health centers. Perhaps there is another consideration factor such as prestige or convenience issues. I think it might be more to the convenience factor, because sometimes people do need a good atmosphere in doing something," said Dr. Dyah about some Indonesian people who prefer to conduct a medical check-up in the neighboring countries. In addition, a variety of necessary test panels are actually available in various hospitals or private clinical laboratories in Indonesia where the quality control has been well-standardized. Therefore, why we should go far abroad to get a medical check-up?
