Insulin Resistance, PCSK9 and the Incidence of Atherogenic Lipoprotein Phenotype (ALP)
Obesity has become an epidemic problem not only in the developed countries but also in the developing countries such as Indonesia. If insulin resistance occurs, lipid profile and lipoprotein undergo changes which are characterized by elevated triglyceride levels, decreased levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and increased levels of apolipoprotein B (apoB) and increased number of small, dense low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, with normal or slightly elevated LDL cholesterol levels.
Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is a protease that regulates the LDL receptor (LDLr) levels. PCSK9 levels are associated with insulin resistance, levels of apoB and triglyceride, so that this protease might be a factor which mediates the incidence of ALP in insulin resistance.
